Laying the Groundwork for Generations to Come

Rebuilding our Sanctuary Plaza on solid ground—and creating a safer, more accessible, and more welcoming space for future ministry.

WHY WE'RE REBUILDING

What began as a sinking plaza became something much bigger.

For more than thirty years, the Sanctuary Plaza experienced periodic settling. Engineering investigations eventually revealed voids and deteriorating materials beneath the surface—remnants of the former Ellis Building, demolished in 1992.

Rather than continue repairing individual areas, we're addressing the underlying problem through a comprehensive excavation and reconstruction.

We're not simply repairing a plaza. We're preparing it for generations to come.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About the Project

What happened to the plaza?

When the former Ellis Building was demolished in 1992, portions of the basement and demolition debris remained underground. Over time, materials deteriorated and settled, creating voids beneath the plaza.

What are we doing to correct the problem?

The affected area is being excavated to remove unsuitable materials, then rebuilt with properly engineered and compacted fill before the plaza is reconstructed.

Why are we installing a fence and gates?

Our Children's Center opens directly onto the plaza near busy downtown streets. The planned perimeter will help create a safer outdoor ministry and gathering space while improving building security when the church is closed.

Why make these improvements now?

The church was already planning improvements to this area. Completing them during reconstruction avoids disturbing newly finished work later.

How can I give?
